I’ve had the vision for this piece for a few years ago. It’s only the second time I’ve sculpted true insects. With the first time being the little Valentine love bugs from several years ago.
When I was a kid, I loved to play outside in the garden, making and decorating mud cakes, and playing with my dolls. I used to collect and make all kinds of wild bits of things to use with my dolls. I didn’t play with a ton of bugs, but I did with moths, roly-poly’s, butterflies, caterpillars and lizards. Small bugs. I used to study them and imagine that they had families and lives of their own. Wouldn’t kill an insect for fear of killing someone’s family member.
This is also what I consider one of my first pieces that is a complete scene and not just a solo character standing on a simple base. This piece was brought together by using paper clay spun, cotton fabric glue a little woodworking, a vintage cornucopia basket and just a lot of various elements to pull the piece together.
I hope you like it as much as I do and you can see a peak into my imagination when you look at it.
